How much access to outside news sources does the prison have? Like, would they know about high-profile crimes that have taken place after they arrived? (Basically I want to know if someone who has been there for two years would recognize a newcomer from the news or something.)

They would have reasonable access, yes! There is a TV in the common room, inmates can buy TVs (though they are expensive and only have a few channels), and newspapers and magazines would be available as well. If a newcomer's crime is newsworthy they could definitely be recognized.
